Sebastian Roberto Matta is a Chilean artist who trained in Paris and joined Surrealism in the 1930s. His Surrealist works are dominated by astral and hallucinated inner landscapes and lead Surrealist painting towards Abstract Expressionism. Subsequently, Matta’s imagery shifted to science fiction themes in which man is besieged by machines that sometimes seem recycled from old cars as a provocation to consumerism, and others take on the appearance of tormented insects. He has been defined as one of the most visionary painters of the 20th century and even when he treats subjects inspired by the ironically Pop imagery of the comic strip world, as in the case of the exhibited work ‘Sexuberanza’ from 1970, the extremely visionary and at the same time playful aspect of his surrealist artistic inspiration remains evident.
